Neighborhood protests 6th liquor store opening within a one-mile stretch

(WJBK) -

A group in a Detroit neighborhood says their streets already have enough liquor stores - five within a one-mile stretch. They are protesting the opening of what would become the sixth store, one that closed years ago after being destroyed by a fire.

Christopher Karim says Nino's Market at Buckingham Road and East Warren Avenue has been around since 1958, and his family has owned the business since 1990. He has worked hard to rebuild the business and plans to open in a few weeks. "I'm hiring people from the area. It's a brand new building - I think it's a beautiful building," he tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom. "I want people to understand that we're not here to hurt anybody, we're just trying to come back to the business we've had."

Yet some in the Morningside community say the already-existing liquor stores attract too much crime as it is.

"It's not uncommon to see a police car and an EMS truck in front of the liquor stores around here," says Pastor Darell Reed.

"[They're] full of people, belligerent, already drunk, coming to get more, people standing outside trying to ask for money - makes you not even want to walk down the street past the liquor store," adds Gregory Hunter.

The group has taken the business to court citing expired permits. The case goes to court Friday. Karim says he expects the case to be dismissed, and claims one of the liquor stores down the streets is paying the attorney fees.

The group tells Isom the attorney took the case on a pro bono basis, and they plan to protest if the case is dismissed.

NOV. 22 UPDATE: An attorney for Karim says the judge dissolved the motion in court on Friday, and Karim will proceed with opening the store as planned.
