The moment convicted drunk driver Madeline Rackley plunged her car into Lady Bird Lake, her backseat passenger did not survive.
Rackley drove her car into the lake underneath the I-35 overpass along Festival Beach in July of 2012. Two weeks ago she pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Now FOX 7 has obtained the video showing exactly what happened.
In dash camera video from APD Officer Ashley Edwards' patrol car you see Rackley's car go straight into Lady Bird Lake. The back end rises.
You're unable to see this, but according to court paperwork, Rackley and a female passenger climb out of the windows. You can hear them talking with officers.
Three minutes later the car goes down fast. Officer Matt Judd runs into the water to get the women.
The officers then learn of a third passenger in the backseat named Ryan Whittington. They are not able to save him.
The next video clip is of Rackley in the back of a patrol car. She can be heard crying. The officer driving can be heard stating a body has been found, meaning Whittington. He was 25.
Rackley was sentenced to 10 years of probation for the crime.
Officer Edwards and Officer Judd were rewarded for their life-saving actions.
