The American Cancer Society will hold its 37th annual Great American Smokeout on Thursday.

A social media chat encouraging people to snuff it out will take place from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Use #QuitForGood on Twitter or Facebook to contribute to the dialogue and spread awareness.

Visit the American Cancer Society's website for more information the Great American Smokeout and helpful tips to quit.

The American Cancer Society will also be at City Hall on Thursday Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plan to increase the cigarette tax $0.75, in an effort to reduce smoking.

It's never too late to quit. A University of Alabama study found people 65 and older who did so were able to cut their risk of heart disease.

Within eight years, the risk fell to the same level seen in non-smokers. Despite the benefit, former smokers were at a higher risk of developing cancer and lung disease.
