ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - People in New Jersey will be able to click a mouse or swipe a screen to gamble online.

A five-day trial period of Internet gambling begins at 6 p.m. Thursday when players invited by casinos to test their systems make real-money bets online.

The test is to see whether the sophisticated technology works correctly, ensuring that all gamblers are within New Jersey's boundaries and that they are 21 or older.

It's also designed to evaluate electronic payment technology, and the integrity and functionality of the casino games.

If all goes well, Internet gambling will be available to anyone within New Jersey starting Tuesday.

"This city, Atlantic City, is on life support, it's bleeding revenue," State Senator Raymond Lesniak said. He was one of the people lawmakers who sponsored the bill. "Internet gaming is going to give it a boost and save jobs. Two casinos would have been closed without the additional revenues that gaming would've brought in."

Online betting will mark the biggest expansion of gambling in New Jersey since casino gambling began in 1978. Only Nevada and Delaware also offer online gambling.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
