Did you know that the average 747 can weigh almost a million pounds at take off? So it is no easy feat to get one of those in the air and keep it there.
Some amazing technology helps pilots get that job done but a new study suggests too many pilots are too reliant on that technology.
Retired commercial airline pilot J.P. Tristani says the report came as no surprise to him.
The FAA is about to release findings from a study which states that today's commercial airline pilots are too dependent on automated systems to fly their aircraft.
An aviation safety committee reviewed more than 9,000 flights over a 7-year period. The panel determined that heavy reliance on on-board automated flight systems led to poor manual flying skills and a lack of confidence, thus increasing the hazards to air travelers.
Tristani, with five decades as an aviator, believes the deadly deadly crash of an Asiana flight last July at San Francisco is one example.
The FAA commissioned the study as further emphasis on passenger safety.
Tristani says he feel that safety starts with proper training of pilots.
