Wednesday afternoon supporters of immigration reform held a rally on the University of Texas campus in response to a mock immigration roundup that was planned by the Young Conservatives of Texas.
The rally was headlined by active immigration reform supporter actress America Ferrera.
The Young Conservatives of Texas had been planning to hold an event called "Catch an Illegal Immigrant" to draw attention to illegal immigration in the United States. Students were to receive gift cards for finding other students wearing signs that said "illegal immigrant" on them.
The group received national attention and backlash from UT officials and students. On Tuesday the chairman of the Young Conservatives of Texas, Lorenzo Garcia, canceled the event out of fear of retaliation and over safety concerns.
The rally on Wednesday was planned to address that event and ask lawmakers to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
