Parents Upset At School's Exclusion Of Their Special Needs Kids

Posted: Updated:

A Texas special needs student is left out of a senior class tradition and his parents are upset. Every year, the school has T-shirts made with the signatures of the seniors.

When Todd Porter went looking for his son Dane's name, he couldn't find it. He quickly realized that Dane, who has Down Syndrome, was excluded.

The thought of his son missing out on this special moment left Todd in tears.

"My son will never know the joy of being a father. He can't legally marry. And he can't go to college. This graduation is a big deal to me and his mother," Porter spoke, barely keeping it together.

School officials say that the four special needs seniors were inadvertently left off the T-shirt.

That's not comforting news to parents, who say the school needs to do better at including special needs students.

Mysti Boehler's son Jeremy suffers from Cohen Syndrome. He can't speak and is visually impaired. She says that for her family, this is much more than a simple T-shirt.

It's a moment in their lives. It's one of the biggest that they get. After this, there's not a lot that they get; there's not a lot out there for them," Boehler said, candidly.

Both Porter and Boehler say the school district has to make an effort to include special needs students so something like this doesn't happen again.
