The body was found near the trailhead by Barton Springs Pool. Investigators believe the body had been there for quite a while.
Initially police said it was a woman's body. However, now detectives say the body is so badly decomposed that they cannot make that determination.
A city of Austin employee found the body Monday afternoon off the trail in a wooded area. Police were called and the person was pronounced dead a few minutes later at 2:48 PM.
Austin Police Detectives used an all-terrain vehicle to get to the scene. They have said they do not believe the person was a victim of flooding from earlier this month, nor do they suspect foul play.
The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office was also called to the scene. It will perform an autopsy to determine how the person died.
Police shut down the trail while they investigated.
