Man charged with assault after nightclub shooting

Posted: Updated:

Police say cell phone video was instrumental in helping them identify a suspect in a recent shooting in downtown Austin. That video was shown exclusively on FOX 7 last week and now more video of the crime is surfacing.

Police tell us 21-year-old Donavan Hunt was performing with his rap group "Da Young Outlawz" inside of Quantum Lounge the night of November 7.

After an argument between "Da Young Outlawz" and another group got heated, police say Quantum Lounge management asked them to leave.

New cell phone video shows the arguing continues as several people leave the club. All of a sudden a fight breaks out. A few seconds later police say Donavan Hunt pulls out a gun and starts shooting, striking two men.

"I see him trying to point at me and so I'm trying to move around. The last shot I jump, cause I see him point at my feet," said Don Walker Jr., gunshot victim.

Don Walker Jr. was shot three times; in his foot, right arm and chest.

Other cell phone video, shown only on FOX 7 last week, was also obtained by police and was a helpful tool in their investigation.

"The cell phone video allowed us to do screen captures of individual frames on the video, which we were able to send out to the media and it was put up on websites. We got information from citizens on those videos that identified the people in them," said Detective Calvin Pierce, Austin Police Department.

At this point police say they are following up on leads and hope to arrest the suspect.

"Originally we believe he's from Louisiana but there were some addresses in Austin that were associated with him that we've been checking out and still trying to locate him at this time," Pierce said.

We spoke with Mark Hempson, a lawyer for Quantum Lounge, he says he has never heard of the group "Da Young Outlawz" and they were not performing that night. He also maintains that nothing happened inside of the nightclub.

We searched for crime statistics within a 500 feet radius of where the shooting happened.

It shows that since September, there have been nine assaults causing injury and two aggravated assaults, five of those incidents were connected to a bar or nightclub.

TABC tells us they have their own investigation underway. They are waiting for APD to finish theirs before they can proceed.
