DETROIT (WJBK) -

A large commercial building caught on fire after an explosion around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. The building had hazardous materials inside.

Fox 2's Ron Savage spoke with investigators who were told by employees they were mixing two chemicals which caused a violent reaction that caused an explosion. All seven employees were able to get out of the building and no one was injured.

The result of the fire was a potentially toxic plume of smoke that forced police and fire crews to evacuate a 300 meter radius around the fire. Fire officials called the fire a level 3 hazardous material situation at its peak. As of 4:30 p.m. the fire was downgraded to a level 1.

The neighborhood is a mix of homes, small shops and warehouses. Savage reports at 6 p.m. some residents were allowed to return home but some were still under evacuation.

The building is located at 13271 Mt. Elliott in Detroit, which is south of McNichols, at the corner of Rupert Street.

Video from SkyFox shows the name Chemical Technology on the side of the building.

A Google search on that address returns the following business:

Chemical Technology Adhesives and Coatings.
