Big changes are coming to MoPac between Parmer and Lady Bird Lake. Construction signs go up next week for a two year improvement project on MoPac which will add one express lane in each direction.
Construction is set to begin after Thanksgiving. The project will add one express lane in each direction. Drivers in that lane will be charged a variable toll. It goes up when traffic is heavy and down when is light. Initial rates could range from 25 cents to $4 a trip or higher.
Construction will occur around the clock, but lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Official expect slowdowns and delays in contrition zones with lane shifts and re-striping.
"We're going to try to keep traffic moving as best as we can, it's a construction zone inevitably there will be issues from time to time but we've done everything we can to try and have most of the work at night when it involves the need to close lanes," Steve Pustelnyk of Central Texas Mobility Authority said.
Main lanes may close as early as 5 p.m. on Sundays. Some shoulder, frontage roads and cross roads may also be closed during the day.
The project will also require Austin Energy, Time Warner Cable, AT&T and water lines to be relocated in order to build some of the sound walls. Sound walls are a priority. Officials say until the sound walls are built noise will be an issue.
