Austin activates cold weather shelter plan

Posted: Updated:

As temperatures are expected to drop below or around freezing, the city of Austin has opened additional shelters for the homeless.

When temperatures drop below 35 degrees in wet weather or 32 degrees in dry weather, temporary shelters are opened in addition to those available at the Salvation Army and the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless. The Salvation Army has 289 beds available. The additional shelters at churches and rec centers can accommodate 400 more people.

Capital Metro buses will be available to pick up homeless people in need of shelter at the ARCH at 7th and Neches. The buses will return at 6:00 AM the next day to pick up the homeless from the temporary shelters.
