Corporal Tom Hardies and several other Austin Police officers were in the flood-ravaged parts of Southeast Austin Sunday afternoon when they got a call that shots were being fired a few blocks away on Creek Bend.
Hardies was one of the first officers to get there. When they drove up, they saw 2 men and a woman in the driveway.
Police believe one of the men shot the other man in the leg, possibly with a shotgun.
"Right now we've got one victim and one suspect. No reason to believe the public is in any danger with anybody else in the area," Hardies said.
Neighbor Virginia Coy lives a few houses down.
"Most of our neighbors, we know them. It's usually quiet here and everybody's good and everything and so I was kind of surprised," Coy said.
She and her family were having a late lunch when they heard the shots.
"My daughter said 'Did you hear that?' and I go 'No,' I thought it was just like a...somebody hit a box or something and about a minute later we heard it again, another gunshot,' Coy said.
Her husband called 9-1-1. When she went outside, she saw police telling a man to get on his knees.
"Yeah I saw the police, I saw the ambulance. And then shortly later I saw them pull out somebody on the stretcher but they looked like they were going to be ok," she said.
Neighbors saw a small child during the chaos. Police confirm that but they say the child is safe and wasn't harmed.
"We're gonna talk to the neighbors, we've got our crime scene guys...and you know they're gonna take their pictures and do their stuff they need to do, collecting any evidence that they may need to," Hardies said.
We checked with police a little while ago and they didn't have an update for us on the man's condition.
They say the suspect will most likely be charged with aggravated assault.
