Fire Doesn't Stop Congregation's Sunday Service

Posted: Updated:
West Philadelphia -

Fire may have torched "Faith Outreach Ministries' church on North 60th street, but it didn't extinguish the West Philadelphia Congregation's spirit.

"The building wasn't the church. We are! We are still here and praising him. Faith Outreach will go on, "exclaimed Assistant Pastor Rudolph Mills as he stood in front of members.

The church's Sunday services went on as scheduled down the street in the living room of Bishop Bobby Scales' home.

"The Bible says the church begins in you. So if it's not in you it will not start in the building," explained Bishop Scales.

Fire Officials say the flames likely started on the second floor around 3:45 Sunday morning. Fortunately no one was inside and no injuries reported.

For seven years Bishop Scales' small congregation has called the building home by growing its members through outreach programs.

"Certain teens go through stuff and when I needed someone to talk to or needed prayer they were there," explained member Darnell Steele.

Now the church that's provided food and shelter for those in need is in need of a little prayer itself. As people stood outside the church cleaning up, Assistant Pastor Rudolph Mills vowed the church will rise from the rubble so they can continue to help feed the spiritual needs of this West Philly neighborhood.

"Whether we're at the church or the house we will continue to do what we can for

this community," said Mills.

Fire officials haven't determined what sparked the flames.

Bishop Scales says he doesn't know of any problems with the building. He says he's in the process of trying to buy the building and will rebuild in the next two months.
