Lawmakers take campaign limits case to high court

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Top legislative leaders are appealing a court ruling that put Arizona's new higher limits on campaign contributions on hold.

Lawyers for state Senate President Andy Biggs and House Speaker Andrew Tobin filed a petition Monday with the Arizona Supreme Court for a review of the case.

They want the state's highest court to lift an injunction issued by the state Court of Appeals last month.

The appeals court ruled that a 2013 state law's higher campaign contribution limits cannot be implemented because they conflict with limits set by a voter-approved law.

The higher limits would have raised the caps on state and local races ten-fold for the combined primary and general election cycles.

The Arizona Court of Appeals' ruling sent the case back to a trial judge for further proceedings.
