Students impacted by floods return to school

Posted: Updated:

Nearly one third of the 876 students at Perez Elementary were impacted by last week's flooding. Monday morning students went back to school after classes were canceled for two days.

Principal David Kauffman said it was great to get students back on campus and back into their routines.

"Parents are dealing with life and death and trying to find shelter and food," Kauffman explained that his students were visibly upset. "The kids were concerned that they weren't going to be able to do their homework."

The school is in one of the hardest hit areas. Last Thursday, water reached the playground and damaged the fence which crews worked to replace Monday. About 75 students were absent which is almost twice as many on an average day.

Students who lost everything are getting help. Dozens of backpacks with brand new school supplies were donated to the school. The generosity is needed and appreciated according to Kauffman. The school received the donations from the district's resource center and non-profits.
