Chicago's transportation commissioner to step down

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago Transportation Commissioner Gabe Klein, whose tenure included the installation of speed cameras near schools and parks and protected bike lanes, is stepping down.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Klein announced on his personal website Friday that he's leaving at the end of the month to return to the private sector. Klein did not say what job he might be taking.

Klein is known for his innovative ideas. But his tenure with the city was not without controversy. When the city embarked on its Divvy bike-sharing program, the contract was awarded to an Oregon company where Klein once worked as a consultant.

Though Klein had recused himself from the selection process, a rival bidder's claim that the selection process wasn't fair prompted the city's inspector general to launch an investigation.
