One-handed basketball star's college hoops dream comes true

The future is bright for Milton High School senior Zach Hodskins.  He was born with only one hand, but it hasn't stopped him from landing a spot on the University of Florida's basketball team.

Those who know Zach call him an inspiration.  He told FOX 5's Ron Gant he uses the one hand God gave him the best way he knows how, and it's that kind of attitude that's gotten him where he is today.

He's 6'4" and can dunk and dribble.  Zach has worked much harder on those skills than most basketball players.  He was born with only half of his left arm, but he says he's never asked God why he was made that way.

"I try to figure out what my purpose for being like this was," he said.

These days, his purpose is on the court.  Zach's dreams have finally become a reality, and he's now committed to play basketball for the Florida Gators.

"I've always loved it to play and the competitiveness of it and the physicality.  I just never wanted to give up on my dreams-- even when people said I couldn't make it to the next level from high school," Zach told FOX 5.

Still, the road he's had to travel hasn't always been easy.  Zach says while the physical disadvantage hasn't impacted him on the court, it has been tough mentally.

"God gave me the will to have the mindset to just keep going forward through any adversity," he said.

Milton head coach Matt Kramer says Zach is an example that there really are no excuses.  Kramer says Zach may only have one hand, but he's twice as good as many players with two.

"When you watch him play, he wears his intensity on his sleeve and he's a great guy to have on your team," said Kramer.  "I don't think the other guys are going to like playing against him very much."

The Alpharetta teen says he's ready to take on college competitors-- and whatever else life decides to throw at him. He started practicing for his last high school basketball season this week.
