Detroit man gunned down in his home, may have been wrongfully targeted

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Detroit man is gunned down at his home, just one day after his birthday. Sources tell Fox 2 they believe the shooters may have been after someone else.

"We got too many killings in Detroit that's completely nonsense - such as this one," Rev. Curtis Williams says.

As a pastor and funeral director he deals a lot with death, but it's not enough to help him cope with the loss of his brother.

"I just left a funeral of a one-year-old child today, you know, because I still had to take care of this family, even though I'm being challenged with the same kind of grief," he tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley.

William Maurice Williams was gunned down at his home on Detroit's east side Monday night - one day after he celebrated his birthday.

"This is an unnecessary killing of a 67-year-old man, who was celebrating his life just the day before with his family," Rev. Williams says.

Sources tell Fox 2 at least one of the weapons used was an AK47 and that the suspects were after someone else.

"Turn yourself in. If you were man enough to do what you did, be man enough to take the responsibility of what you've done," Rev. Williams urges.

William Williams never married and had no children. He's survived by a sister and his younger brother Curtis.

"Being an older brother, there's a range of things that will stick with me. His kindness, his kindness, because, as one of my relatives said to me shortly ago, 'He didn't bother anybody,'" Rev. Williams remembers.

Detroit police believe two people were involved in this shooting and they're on the lookout for a tan colored SUV, either a Suburban or a Tahoe. If you have any information call police.

William William's funeral will be held next Monday at 11 a.m. at Aijalon Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Original reports stated the victim was shot while sitting in his vehicle. Police have now confirmed he was inside his home at the time of the shooting.
