Hernando County deputies uncovered a gruesome scene in a Brooksville neighborhood Sunday night.
Sheriff Al Nienhuis says a father in the middle of a divorce shot and killed his two children while they slept in their beds – and then turned the gun on himself.
Deputies arrived at the home at 975 Nodding Shade Drive in the Trillium subdivision on Sunday night around 9:30. The mother of the children had told deputies she tried contacting the father, identified as Daniel Castrillon, all weekend.
Castrillon apparently picked the kids up Friday from the mother, who is identified as Luz Jimenez. Deputies say the couple got into an argument Friday night, and Castrillon took the kids home with him.
Jimenez was supposed to take the kids to a weekend birthday party, but that Friday night was the last time she would ever see them, Nienhuis said.
"Obviously over the last 12 to 13 hours we've been trying to piece this all together," he said.
Deputies forced their way into the home and discovered the three bodies inside. The children have been identified as Susana, 8, and Sabastion, 7.
"It's very troubling any time you have innocent children killed," Nienhuis continued. "It hurts even more when the person who killed them was a parent."
Nienhuis says Jimenez filed for divorce Oct. 12.
