JOLIET TOWNSHIP, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man pushed his way into a house and punched three people, including two senior citizens, to grab $10 early Wednesday, police said.

Will County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said that about 12:40 a.m., Matthew C. Thom, 30, rang the doorbell of a house in the 1700 block of Aspen Lane, which was answered by a 69-year-old woman, the Joliet Herald News is reporting.

"He said he lived down the street and his mother needed $15 for a cab. She said she didn't have any money, but would ask her boyfriend, who took a $10 bill out of his pocket as he came up to the door," Kaupas said.

When Thom saw the money, he knocked the woman to the floor, punched the 74-year-old man in the face and took the cash, according to reports.

A 27-year-old relative who heard the commotion came downstairs and also was punched in the face before he was able to chase Thom from the house to a waiting car, Kaupas said.

When the woman was pushed to the floor, she suffered a broken tailbone and bruises on her head from striking the hardwood floor, according to reports. An East Joliet fire ambulance took her to Silver Cross Hospital. The two men who'd been punched also were examined at the hospital.

Reports said the man who chased Thom gave deputies a license plate and description of the vehicle and the woman who was driving it.

Sheriff's police broadcast a description of the vehicle and attempted to locate the owner.

At 1:37 a.m. Thursday the car was stopped by Crest Hill police, who questioned the woman driving it, according to reports. After sheriff's detectives interviewed the woman later that day, Thom was brought in for questioning. Thom, of 4429 Timber Ridge, was arrested on one count of home invasion, two counts of aggravated battery, one count of residential burglary, one count of battery and two counts of aggravated battery to a senior citizen.
