1 Officer Struck By SUV, Another Dragged During Arrest

PHILADELPHIA -

Two police officers are injured in North Philadelphia after a violent confrontation with a suspect.

People who live on Tioga Street will come out and see the aftermath Wednesday morning, including cars all smashed up because this was the end of what had been a very violent arrest.

The suspect, a man in his 30s identified only by police so far as Seth from Frankford, was driving a Hyundai SUV that officers say was double-parked as he stopped to pick up a friend. Police say the two were going to go sell some jewelry to factory workers who were finishing a late shift.

But apparently the suspect had been wanted for a string of burglaries in Bensalem, and one of the things he allegedly stole was a cell phone with GPS tracking still on.

So, Bensalem detectives were hot on his trail, found out where he was, courtesy of that cell phone tracking device, and notified Philadelphia police to help them out and get this suspect.

When the Philly officers come up to him and approached the suspect, they say he floored it and took off while one officer was reaching in trying to stop him by shutting the car off. That officer got dragged while the other officer got rammed and thrown over the hood.

Then, about 800 feet later, the situation ends with the Hyundai SUV smashing into a detective's unmarked Ford car, ripping off its door.

Detectives showed great restraint by not shooting the man, but they did have to use a stun device on him because he still allegedly refused to surrender.

And the reason why is that he apparently was recently released by the parole board after another very violent arrest in his past, police say.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said at the scene: "Philadelphia police arrived on the scene, and they immediately went to make an apprehension of this suspect. When Bensalem officers and Philadelphia police exited the vehicle and approached the suspect, the suspect intentionally struck with his vehicle one of the Philadelphia police officers and also crashed into the Philadelphia police car. The second Philadelphia police officer went to make an apprehension and to reach into the driver's side of the suspect's vehicle. That officer was (dragged) from the 800 block of East Tioga to the 900 block of East Tioga."

Police said the last time they had to arrest this suspect they were forced to shoot him.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley has more details in this live report from the scene Wednesday morning.
