Same-Sex Marriages Begin Monday In New Jersey

Posted: Updated:
JERSEY CITY, N.J. -

It will still be another few months before New Jersey's Supreme Court hears arguments for and against legalizing same sex marriage.

But, in the meantime, same-sex couples have the green light to get married starting Monday.

Same-sex couples across the state applied for the marriage license after the NJ supreme court ruled gay marriages must be allowed starting Monday.

Gov. Chris Christie is against gay marriage, saying he wants the issue decided by the voters. His press secretary released this statement: "While the Governor firmly believes that this determination should be made by all the people of the State of New Jersey, he has instructed the Department of Health to cooperate with all municipalities in effectuating the order of the Superior Court under the applicable law."

People getting married for the first time will have to wait 72 hours after getting the license.

Fox's Liz Dahlem reported from Jersey City on Saturday on the first step in the process. So far, Jersey City has had 20 couples apply.

New Jersey residents who were married in other states and want their marriage recognized in New Jersey can begin getting married in the state on Monday.

The New Jersey Supreme Court will start hearings arguments in January.
