ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -

'Holiday Market' in Royal Oak switched out all fluorescent and incandescent lighting to energy-saving LEDs. The switch took about six months to replace five thousand bulbs in 25 different fixtures.

"Everything looks much more crisp. It seems to just have a better feel about it. I think LED for the environment is wonderful," says shopper Saule Jackunas.

The project cost the specialty gourmet market about $200,000 but the store expects to save about 25 percent in energy costs every year.

"We're taking a load off the grid. We're saving roughly three thousand dollars a month in electricity. That's a lot of load off the grid. There's no mercury; there's no carbon that it's putting out and all these kinds of things that a fluorescent puts out. So it's a very positive thing," says owner Craig Mangold.

The work was done by the Straits Lighting Co., a new Farmington Hills business capitalizing on the green technology. The business is about a year and a half old and says more and more local companies are looking into LEDs.

"We primarily focus on commercial businesses, so from small retailers to big industrial automakers and their suppliers," says Ricky Singh, president of the Straits Lighting Co.

The bulbs also last longer -- five to 10 years -- which cuts down on the cost of replacements. 'Holiday Market' even replaced the lighting inside the coolers and freezers to LED. Even the cakes in the bakery benefit. Mangold tells us the old fluorescent lights used to fade the icing.

"It's the right thing to do and it's the thing of the future, so we're very happy we did it," Mangold says.

'Holiday Market' is on South Main Street in Royal Oak. The store has been in business since 1972.
