Humboldt Park school turns to crowd-funding to put on play

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Erie Elementary Charter School in Humboldt Park is trying to raise $6,000 by next Wednesday to put on "James and the Giant Peach." The cash-strapped school has turned to Kickstarter to find the money.

In the past, the school has asked students to pay a participation fee to put on plays. But it has become a struggle for most students in the low-income neighborhood.

Erie Elementary music teacher Kimberly Kays joined Good Day Chicago Wednesday morning to explain why they turned to crowd-funding for the arts, what the money will be used for and how far they are from their goal.

To make a donation by Oct. 23 or to find out more about the school's hope to put on "James and the Giant Peach," please visit Erie Elementary's Kickstarter page.
