NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A law governing gun sales in New Jersey that has been on the books since 2002 but hasn't actually taken effect may finally do so in the next few years.

The law in question mandates that gun dealers in the state exclusively sell so-called smart guns -- firearms that will only shoot when held by an authorized user -- within three years of the first such weapon hitting the market.

Companies have been working on the technology for many years, but a gun with a viable and reliable "smart" mechanism has not come to market. However, a German company may be very close, according to The Record.

The company, named Armatix, says it has developed what is calls intelligent mechatronic systems for securing guns by authenticating the authorized user via PIN code, biometric pattern or transponder.

Smart System consists of a radio-controlled watch that is responsible for gun access and use. A Smart System gun will only shoot if it is within range of this watch. It is possible to release the safety mechanism via the radio controlled watch activated by means of a PIN code. As soon as the gun loses radio contact with the watch – e.g. if it is knocked out of the shooter’s hand or in case of loss, theft, etc. – it automatically deactivates itself, according to the company.

Opponents of the state law requiring so-called smart guns, including the head of the Association of New Jersey Rife & Pistol Clubs, are not impressed.

In a statement to MyFoxNY.com, executive director Scott Bach said: “New Jersey’s smart-gun law is as dumb as it gets. It forces you to use an unproven technology to defend your life, and then exempts the state from liability when the gun goes ‘click’ instead of ‘bang.’ If it’s such a great idea, then law enforcement shouldn’t be exempt, and the free market should be allowed to determine its viability.”
