PHOENIX -

A man suspected in an assault on a maintenance worker at an apartment near 17th Avenue and Hatcher on Sunday morning self-surrendered to Phoenix Police Monday afternoon.

The suspect, 38-year-old Daniel Lee Cook, allegedly got into a physical fight with a 22-year-old maintenance employee at Nueva Vista Apartments' swimming pool.

The employee has been identified as Richard Allen Bankston.

Police say both men fell into the pool while fighting, but then continued to fight outside the pool.

Cook reportedly struck Bankston with an object and then left the pool area with blood on him.

When police arrived, they say Bankston was in the pool area with an upper body injury.

He was taken to a hospital where he later died. At this time, it's not known what was used to injure the man.

At this point, police have not released the motive for the alleged murder. They will be examining surveillance video from the complex. The investigation is ongoing.

A memorial for Bankston has been set up outside the pool area.
