Nun leaps from convent to escape fire

Posted: Updated:

A nun who has dedicated her life towards helping others is being treated at a hospital after escaping from a fire at a convent. Now police are trying to figure out if someone wanted to harm her and the other nuns.

Sister Regina is in the intensive care unit at Staten Island University hospital after jumping from a 2nd floor window Saturday morning. She broke 3 vertebrae in her back. The fire department says flames were spreading through the convent of St Joseph Hill Academy and she had no other choice to save her life..

Police secured the school campus after the fire, as detectives investigate it as a possible bias or hate crime. Another nun suffered minor injuries along with 4 firefighters. At Sunday Mass, prayers were offered for her speedy recovery.

Sources told Fox 5 that the fire is suspicious because it started in two different locations. Fire department officials are investigating, as police look into whether there's any connection to vandalism at the convent last summer.
