Chicago Marathon: Rerouted CTA buses, more L service

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The CTA is running longer L trains and adding service on Sunday to accommodate crowds expected for the Chicago Marathon, which will reroute some buses.

The changes are being put in place for the marathon, which begins at 7:30 a.m. north of Jackson on Columbus Drive and winds through the city.

More frequent trains are being run on the Red Line.

Longer trains are operating on the Red, Brown, Green, Blue and Orange lines during the race.

Brown Line service to the Loop will start earlier than usual. The first inbound train will leave the Kimball terminal at 5 a.m.

The Green Line also will start operating earlier than usual. The first trains will leave the Harlem/Lake terminal at 5:30 a.m. and the 63rd/Cottage Grove end-of-the-line at 5:40 a.m.

The Purple Line will start earlier, too. The first train leaves the Linden station in Wilmette at 5:30 a.m. for Howard, where riders can transfer to the Red Line to downtown.

Service on the No. 3 King Drive bus route will start earlier as well, beginning at 5:30 a.m. To accommodate runners and spectators, the route will have buses every fifteen minutes between McCormick Place and Walton/Mies van der Rohe until about an hour after the race starts.

Several L stations are also located near designated viewing stations where spectators can watch the marathon. Those stations are:

• the Grand, Chicago, Monroe and Addison stations on the Red Line

• the Sedgwick station on the Brown Line

• the UIC-Halsted station on the Blue Line

• the 18th Street station on the Pink Line

• the Halsted station on the Orange Line

• the Bronzeville-IIT station on the Red and Green lines

• and the Roosevelt station on the Red, Green and Orange lines

Roughly three dozen bus routes along the race course will be rerouted because of the marathon, the CTA said.

The CTA estimates the bus reroutes will last from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. downtown and on the South Side, from 6:30 a.m. to noon on the North Side and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the West Side.
