NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The New York Yankees have re-signed manager Joe Girardi, securing him to a four-year deal, the team announced Wednesday. That would keep him in New York through the 2017 season.

Girardi's previous two deals with the team were three years each. He took over from Joe Torre for the 2008 season.

The Chicago Cubs were also very interested in hiring Girardi, according to reports. Girardi, who grew up in Illinois, had two stints with the Cubs as a player.

"It wasn't ever a lot of thought that I might not possibly come back. I just had to make sure that everyone was still on board," Girardi said on a conference call. "Our lives have been here for six years. I think stability is important."

The deal is for $16 million guaranteed and up to $4 million in bonuses, the AP reported, citing a source.

Girardi, 48, has won one World Series (2009) with the Yankees in his six seasons as manager with a 564-408 record. He also has three rings with the Yankees as a player.

Upon completion of this new contract, he will have been manager for 10 seasons.

In addition to the Yankees and Cubs, Girardi also played for Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals. He managed the Florida Marlins for the 2006 season.

A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancée to an NFL executive five months ago, while league executives have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week. The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."
