High-speed chase caught on camera

Posted: Updated:

A man steals a truck and trailer then sets off on a high speed ride down Highway 183--swerving and running into vehicles and objects along the way before crashing in eastern Travis County. Part of it was all caught on video.

Cell phone video was shot on southbound Highway 183 Monday afternoon. Friends Damon Cloyd and Christian Ross had just left Home Depot near Lakeline Blvd when they say a pickup pulling a horse trailer nearly hit them.

"He almost clipped the front end of the truck with the trailer," Ross said.

So that's when Cloyd pulled out his phone and started shooting video.

"He was swerving erratically back and forth down 183 trying to run people off the road," Ross said.

At one point you can see the truck swerve into another truck as it tries to get out of the way. A red Neon seemed to be chasing the truck.

"I thought the truck was in trouble, maybe the car might have been, following him. Maybe he was running for his life, that's what it seemed like since he was swerving back and forth," Cloyd said.

Cloyd and Ross followed the truck down Highway 183 and then on to Highway 290. They struggled to keep up with him as they say the driver reached speeds close to 100 miles per hour.

"A piece of the vehicle had flown off, or the trailer, had flown back and almost hit several vehicles and the vehicle we were in," Ross said.

As they went through construction zones, they guys say the truck hit a number of orange construction barrels that they then had to avoid.

"Just hitting everything he possible could," Cloyd said.

After he turned the corner to get on the 130 toll road, that's where his reckless road trip came to an end. When Sheriffs deputies arrived on scene, he didn't give up easily.

More than 20 miles after they started following the driver, the truck and trailer crashed into a ditch on the side of the 130 toll road on ramp...you can see smoke coming from the truck. Cloyd and Ross were still rolling as Travis County Sheriff's deputies approached the driver. He started running away and that's when the deputy tased him and he fell to the ground. They then handcuffed him and walked him to their car.

"He was saying 'I didn't do it, I didn't do it, it wasn't me,'" Cloyd said.

Sheriff's deputies say the driver is 20-year-old Jeffery Woods. He's now in custody and faces multiple charges.

"I'm just glad he didn't really, seriously hurt someone," Ross said.

According to sheriff's deputies, Woods stole the truck and trailer in Burnet County. He's facing charges there. In Travis County he's been charged with reckless driving possession of marijuana. He's also facing charges of leaving the scene after hitting multiple vehicles. Sheriff's deputies say Woods is from Copperas Cove.
