Police Confirm Child Found With Cocaine At School

Posted: Updated:

Philadelphia Police and The Philadelphia Public School District confirmed a 4-year-old pre-kindergarten student came to East Falls Thomas Mifflin School with crack cocaine. He was also found with more than $170.

"I'm shocked a kid was able to bring drugs to school," Jennifer Gallagher, a parent said.

Philly Police Chief Inspector Cynthia Dorsey said," We were concerned. We were scared to death."

The little boy showed the money to a classmate and that student alerted a teacher on Monday morning.

The classroom was evacuated and swept by a K-9 unit to make sure there weren't any other traces of drugs.

"This is very serious. We have to make sure out children are safe, "Dorsey said.

While the school day went on for the pre-k class, many parents like Jennifer Gallagher picked their little ones up early.

"It's upsetting. So I was getting here early anyway so I came and got her earlier than I normally would have, "Gallagher said.

Other parents came by to check on their children. One parent said the kids weren't afraid or anything. They weren't aware of what happened.

The school district believes the drugs came from outside of the building. The boy later told authorities that the drugs came from his mother's boyfriend, who is supposed to be in rehab. Criminal charges could be filed, an police have confirmed that they will be looking for the man once they get a search warrant.

"If there are illegal narcotics we want to make sure this doesn't happen again and in school," Dorsey said.

The little boy was brought to Saint Christopher's Hospital to be observed and to make sure drugs weren't in his system.

School Officials say parents at this school should expect a letter explaining what happened.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
