CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Several people were in need of shelter early Tuesday after a blaze that started in a residential building spread to their neighboring Humboldt Park neighborhood home on the city's West Side.

The fire was extinguished about 3 a.m. and the American Red Cross was on the scene to aid displaced residents, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.

One man and a firefighter were injured in the blaze that started about 1 a.m. at a three-and-a-half story building in the 3200 block of West Wabansia Avenue before spreading to the building next door, Knight said.

The man was listed in "stable" condition and taken to Norwegian American Hospital, fire officials said.

The firefighter experienced chest tightness on the scene and was taken to St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital in "stable" condition, Knight said.

Jacqueline Uriostegui, who was asleep with her daughter when her home caught fire, told reporters at the scene the six people who live in her apartment were able to escape the blaze safely.

She said the building that caught fire, which is next door to her home, was vacant and 10 people live in her two-and-a-half story building.

Fire officials were releasing few details as the cause of the fire was under investigation.
