Brooklyn DA Hynes flip-flops; will campaign on GOP lines

NEW YORK (AP) -- The longtime Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes will campaign on the GOP line after losing the Democratic primary, a spokesman said.

Hynes has been in office more than 20 years. But he lost the Sept. 10 primary election to Ken Thompson, a former federal prosecutor best known for representing the maid at the center of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn sex scandal.

Hynes previously said he would not actively campaign for another party, though he will appear on the ballot as the candidate for both the Republican and Conservative parties.

A spokesman for Thompson said Hynes was refusing to accept the will of the people, who voted him out.

The 78-year-old Hynes will make an announcement on Tuesday outlining his reasons for actively campaigning.

The general election is Nov. 5.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
