Search For Man Who Slashed Woman's Face With Box Cutter

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -

"My doors will be locked," said Sheila Slaght, as she sat on her porch less than a block away from where a woman was attacked in the Crum Lynne area of Ridley Township. Police say that a man slashed a woman's face several times just before 11:00 a.m. on Monday morning. It happened at the intersection of South Fairview Road and Walter Street.

"It's disgusting," said Slaght.

Police put out a detailed sketch of the suspect. The 57-year-old victim told police that he jumped out from behind some bushes and asked her for cigarettes. When she said she didn't have any, police say that the man did the unthinkable.

He had a box cutter in his hand and before the woman knew it, "He flailed the box cutter up and cut her across her face. They started struggling and he again cut her across her face," described Detective Lieutenant Scott Willoughby of The Ridley Township Police. Police believe the man is homeless and has been staying in the basement of some nearby old apartments in the process of being torn down for housing.

Anthony Betts says he does maintenance for the buildings.

"He's breaking into any abandoned building to sleep and everything, so yeah I've seen him."

Others who live on the property say that the man they believe is the suspect has never been violent. LaToya Byrd says he used to sleep on the steps to her place.

"I just wouldn't say anything because I felt bad for him. I wouldn't say anything like get away from my step as long as he didn't do anything," said Byrd. However, neighbors now say that hearing about the violent attack changes everything.

"I wouldn't want to be near him. I wouldn't try to be too nice about it," said Kim Crawford. Byrd now says, "I would definitely try to call somebody and let them know he's back around."

Police say the suspect's hair is tightly braided in the front and the back is in shoulder length dread locks, which may be extremely matted. He also has pock marks on his face. The victim also said the suspect has a strong foul odor. The suspect is believed to be in his late 20s and about 6 feet tall. If you see him call 911 or Ridley Township Police: (610) 532-4000.
