Deadly Fire In Easton Claims 2 Lives, Injures 4 Others

EASTON, Pa. -

We're following breaking news this morning out of Northampton County.

Two people, one child and one adults, are dead following an overnight fire in Easton.

The fire broke out around two this morning on the 700 block of Spring Garden Street.

We're told it was a twin home that was divided into apartments.

Four other people are hurt, and two of them are badly burned.

Everyone was asleep in the three-story homes that are connected when the flames broke out around 1:30 a.m.

The family in the house next-door heard windows shattering and told FOX 29 News that they thought someone was breaking in. They helped a woman in the house where the fire began get a child to safety while escaping themselves.

The fire chief says there's no evidence of any working smoke alarms in the building where the fire began, even though the landlord says he thought he had them in there. He said they may have been battery-operated, and he has seen tenants in other properties fail to maintain them.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley is reporting from the scene and has more details in the video report above.
