Teenager Hopes To Find Cure For Blindness

Posted: Updated:

13-year-old Michael Smedley kicked off his third annual "Bike the Basin" event Sunday. A fundraiser he and his younger brother Mitch started, hoping to an end to their lack of sight.

"What a person with perfect sight can see 500 feet away I can see 20 feet away," Smedley said.

At least 250 kids hopped on their bike, riding around the Northampton Civic Center's track to raise money for retinal research.

"While I'm out there going up and down the hills I'm just thinking I'm doing this for Mike he's my friend and I've got to help him with this, " said Calvin Tobias who rode in the event.

At the tender age of three and a half months old Michael was diagnosed with Leber's Congenital Amaurosis. But the Richboro Middle School 8th grader isn't letting the rare genetic disease sack him. He's the starting center for his school's football team.

This weekend he was at his annual fundraiser stroking the keys with his band Casual Friday

The "Bike the Basin" event is one of many fundraisers the Smedley family's foundation hosts through the year to raise money for retinal research. So far this year they've raised $100,000 to help find a cure.

"It's crazy how far we've come from starting Bike the Basin at our kitchen table," said Michael's 10-year-old brother Mitch.

"To see all these people behind our mission is incredible," said Michael.

As Michael and his brother continue the journey to find a cure for their blindness, their mother says with the community's continued support and doctors' research--like Michael's theme song says-- it's hard not to believe a cure will come soon.

"When journey wrote it, I don't think they had the interpretation we interpret it as, but for me it's more for me if you dream it you can achieve," said Michael.
