Over 500 people get free glasses thanks to Salvation Army, valley eye center

MESA, Ariz. -

More than 500 people in the valley have new prescription glasses thanks to the Salvation Army and a group of eye doctors and employees who volunteered their time Saturday.

Tina George-Reyes got a new pair of glasses--all for free.

"Glasses are very expensive so it was a great opportunity to get a brand new, correct vision pair of glasses," said George-Reyes.

Doctors, technicians and other employees at Southwestern Eye Center donated their time to give glasses to those in need.

"We invite patients who are not able to afford eye care to come in and have an eye exam," said Dr. Arlynn Roper, with Southwestern Eye Center.

"They're pre-screened through the Salvation Army. Today we're seeing over 500 patients. We have about six or seven doctors and staff that are helping us out to volunteer their time on a Saturday."

"We just moved here. I was laid off at my other job so I'm looking for a job now so I don't have insurance right now. I had heard about it though a friend and it sounded like a great opportunity," said George-Reyes.

All patients received a thorough eye exam and were then matched up with a prescription pair of glasses that have been previously used.

"It's a great opportunity to give back to the community," said George-Reyes.

This was the fourth year Southwestern did the program and they say every year it continues to grow.
