A BBQ at a home on Glen Meadow near South Congress and Stassney turned into a police investigation Saturday morning. "We were sitting down outside. There was four adults and three kids," said Angelita Rangel who was at the home to celebrate her birthday. Around 11:00 a.m. she says all of a sudden a vehicle came speeding toward the home. "A car came from that way, just zoomed in didn't stop, didn't hit no other cars, jumped the curb and hit them head on."
Firefighters say the vehicle went through the front yard, through a carport and into the backyard of the home. According to APD, two men, one around age 70 and the other in his late 40s, were sitting under the carport when the vehicle came speeding through. The younger man was holding a one-year-old. Firefighters say the elderly man was trapped under the vehicle and the other man and the child were injured by debris. "The first arriving crews did a fantastic job using some specialized rescue equipment we have: air bags that actually lift and they were able to lift that car very quickly off the person trapped underneath it," said AFD Battalion Chief Palmer Buck.
All three were taken to the hospital. Firefighters tell FOX 7 the men are in critical condition and that the child's injuries are not serious. Police say the driver of the vehicle ran off, leaving two passengers behind. Officers were able to catch him and take him into custody. They are still investigating why the driver went off road and if drugs or alcohol played a factor.
Rangel just hopes the two men will recover. "I'm scared, confused, hurt," she said. "My prayers are with them. I hope they will be OK to come home."
