Booker Responds To Tweet Controversy

Booker Responds To Tweet Controversy

Posted: Updated:
NEWARK, N.J. -

US Senate candidate from New Jersey, Cory Booker, is responding to the release of private conversations he had with a stripper in Oregon.

Booker and Lynsie Lee flirted earlier this year via social media. Lee released screenshots of those conversations earlier this week.

Booker says in his press conference that he talks to everyone and that this whole twitter controversy is no big deal.

"The reality is I communicate to folks and when somebody like this person sends kindness my way, says she has my back and the West Coast loves you, I think was her tweet to me, and by that I mean me, I respond in kind. And that's really what this is, is me responding to people which I do every single day. And frankly, finally, I just have to say, it is all about just that. It is about listening to people and engaging with people no matter what their profession. The only profession that I avoid is actually in Twitter is actually I avoid journalists."

"I don't study peoples' profile," Booker continued. "I've tweeted people back from all different backgrounds. It's not something I pay attention to. But when somebody's kind to me, I often say thank you. Probably one of the most common things I do is thanking people for their kindness and if someone says they like me, I say, 'thank you, you encourage me.' It's what I've been doing for a long, long time."

In answer to a question about whether this is a reaction to the Anthony Weiner situation.

"Look, I think it's because the press corps is obsessed with vegan living and with that, my sympathies and my apologies. But the reality is, anybody who's followed me for enough years sees that I literally talk to everybody. It's the way we should be in public life and casting judgment on folks because of what they do is unacceptable to me and I'm going to continue being me, this doesn't change me at all, and continue talking to everybody. It's what I do in Newark. When I walk down the street, I don't care whose hand I shake. I don't care if they're unemployed or employed and I don't even care, sometimes, if they're a journalist."

Booker is running for the senate seat that belonged to Frank Lautenberg who passed away earlier this year.
