Large building fire, HAZMAT situation cleared in SW Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A large commercial building was on fire for much of Thursday near Wagner and Central streets on the city's southwest side. Arson investigators have taken over the scene now that the fire has been extinguished.

Crews treated the incident as a level-three hazardous materials situation due to a tip that unknown chemicals could be stored inside.

Residents brought photographs to the Detroit Police and Fire departments Wednesday night that show what they believe is illegal dumping going on at the building. Residents have noticed trucks dropping things off during the night. One witness that took photographs inside the building tells Fox 2's Maurielle Lue he saw at least four to five thousand boxes, and some of those were marked with the words "human waste."

No injuries have been reported. Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles, and fire officials urged residents to close doors and windows.

The large, vacant building once housed a trucking company and a bread factory. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
