Charlie LeDuff's 'Good Pugh Hunting'

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (WJBK) -

He may have broken his silence a couple of weeks ago with a resignation later, but the former Detroit City Council President is still missing in action. He hasn't been seen since July. Charlie LeDuff went off to the big apple looking for Charles Pugh.

The last time Charles Pugh was spotted in Detroit was back in June and we were there.

"Is it true?" asked a FOX 2 photographer regarding allegations of an inappropriate contact with an 18-year-old student.

"No. That's crazy," said Pugh.

Just a few days later, poof, and without explanation, Pugh vanished during the city's darkest hour.

The allegations were soon made public after the teen's family filed a criminal complaint with Madison Heights police, a claim they later requested to be dropped. The investigation has since been suspended.

Pugh soon resurfaced in Seattle. Then he had his apartment emptied out in the middle of the night. Finally, he sent a letter in the middle of September formally resigning. No apology, no explanation except to say those allegations are "BS."

A photo of Pugh taken in New York City recently surfaced online. So, we decided to make a day trip to the Big Apple to see if Pugh's new rumored digs in Harlem are true.

We met up with Michael Feeney, a Daily News reporter who took the photo of Pugh at a champagne reception in the New York Times building.

Nice.

"I think it's good that he's here and hopefully he can put what's happened in the past behind him and move forward," said Feeney.

Yeah, but we'd like to know what the hell is going on.

"He does owe it to Detroit, the people of Detroit."

Do you know where he's staying?

"I don't know where he's staying. I know he's staying in Harlem, that's what I do know."

Harlem. Hmm.

We got a tip that he might be staying in a building off 125th Street, but it was like looking for a pinhead in a haystack.

After asking the locals, we explained to the cops and they let us hang our poster in the precinct house. We're not the only ones that think this escapade is weird, Harlem thinks so too.

"He should realize, be a man about it, come clean and do the right thing," said one citizen.

Some locals, including workers at a restaurant, say they've seen Pugh dining alone.

He's still going to fancy restaurants and champagne receptions. It makes you wonder how he can do that when he hasn't had a job in three months.

It makes me wonder about the campaign finance statements. The one without receipts. The one that just doesn't smell very Kosher. I would like to ask him about that.

He's here and he said he was living here now, I thought it was over," said Feeney. "I had no idea that he was still missing."

It is not over.

He might be starting a new life in Harlem, but he shouldn't forget about his old life in Detroit. A couple of loose strings need to be tied up.

And if you see him, Harlem, give me a call.
