New Developments In Deadly Building Collapse

New Developments In Deadly Building Collapse

Posted: Updated:

City Officials have subpoenaed hundreds of pages of documents, related to demolition sites across Philadelphia.

A copy of the subpoena was delivered to Licenses & Inspections Commissioner Carlton Williams on Wednesday. City Controller Alan Butkovitz said he's taking action with a subpoena because L&I have not been cooperating with him on his investigation.

Butkovitz is auditing L&I in response to the June 5th building collapse at 22nd and Market Streets that killed 6 people and injured several others.

The controller wants to see the demolition reports of 300 site inspections conducted by L&I the week following the collapse to see if the department is properly following new safety policies.

He said L&I have failed to produce these documents and is obstructing his investigation.

"This is a life and death matter. People already died. People shouldn't have died. The whole point of the mayor's press conference in June was to ensure everybody not to panic, that it's under control," Butkovitz said. "So if it's under control, show us the records."

The subpoena calls for L&I to Appear before the controller with all of the requested documents on October 7.

The city tells us that it has no problem handing over document. In fact it has already handed over some, but what the controller is requesting could be 3000-plus pages long and L&I want the request to be more specific.
