Granite Run Mall Prepares For Changes

Posted: Updated:

Big plans are happening for a Delaware County landmark, a developer bought the Granite Run Mall. The iconic shopping mall was sold in a competitive bidding process for about $24 million. For many who grew up in Delaware County, the mall provided plenty of memories.

Back in 1974, the Granite Run Mall was one of the most illustrious shopping malls in the region. Times have changed. Anchored by Sears, Boscov's and JC Penney, the mall has been in decline over the past 10 years and many stores have left.

"I was living in media when this mall opened its one of the places I went to for Christmas presents...birthday presents and things like that I'm just blown away." Brian Koons said.

While news of the sale took some shoppers by surprise others we spoke to say it was just a matter of time

"There's barely any stores. You can't get anything really," Will Jordan said.

Over the past decade the mall hasn't generated the foot traffic needed to bring in enough revenue for the tenants like aAessandro Apennato who grew up near the mall and opened Sandro's pizza five years ago.

"It's been tough I have a pizzeria here in the mall growing up ya think a pizzeria in the mall you'll print money it's not like that....I'm working by myself with my cousin just to keep the doors open right now," Spennato said.

The new owners are planning to make the mall a mixed use project that means apartments or townhouses

The mall has stayed open throughout the auction process and will stay open under current management until the sale is finalized.
