Cold Hearted Thieves Target Air Conditioners In South Jersey

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. -

"In and out..professionals."

Call it grand theft air conditioners. Thieves in Mount Laurel, New Jersey have been targeting air conditioners at homes and businesses here, swiping them as fast as they get installed.

"It was installed on Friday and overnight it was gone," contractor Nino Lebron told Fox 29.

The rash of air conditioner thefts has gone on for a month now with more than 10 units stolen from homes, strip malls, even from the roof of this commercial building. Nino Lebron's been renovating this home where thieves made off with a brand new $7,000 air condition unit.

"Its amazing how clean they cut the pipe, so clean. They knew what they were doing, they disconnected the power to the unit in a matter of minutes,"Lebron said.

Victims believe the thieves are after the valuable copper coils, tubing and wiring inside the units. Thieves took $100,000 worth of copper coils from ac units on this building on East Gate Drive. Repairmen were replacing the units Tuesday.

"The amount of money you get for it as opposed to what it costs to replace it, that's the thing.  What do you get, $30 bucks, for something that costs $2,500 to replace," business owner Mike Mulhern told Fox 29.

At these shops in Rancocas Woods, the bandits made off with eight air conditioners, including one belonging to Sav Nop's print shop here.

"I just couldn't understand why people steal this kind of stuff," Nop said. "We need it and they just stole it."

Mike Mulhern owns the local pizza shop here, he says the crime spree is hurting local small businesses.

"Everybody pays. You gotta replace a $2,500 unit, you're pretty much going to work the month for free to replace that unit," he said.

"They're harming everybody, he added.

Mount Laurel Police refused to comment on their investigation. No arrests have been made. It appears the bandits are targeting unoccupied homes and businesses or ones that are under re-construction.

Police are looking for the public's help, if you see something suspicious, call 9-1-1.
