Gabrielle Giffords receives honor at alma mater

CLAREMONT, Calif. -

Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords headed back to her old stomping grounds for a special honor this weekend.

Giffords received the Ellen Browning Scripps Medal from Scripps College, her alma mater.

"Thank you for inviting me here today and thank you for this honor."

The medal is given to women whose accomplishments make a significant difference in opportunities for other women.

Giffords is the first alum to get the award.

Other women to receive the award include former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

"Be passionate, courageous, be your best. Thank you very much," said Giffords.

Giffords graduated from Scripps College in 1993 with a dual major in Latin American studies and sociology.
