West Hollywood Fur Ban: First of Its Kind

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of people celebrated in West Hollywood, they held signs depicting what they call animal cruelty to  send a message against wearing and selling fur.

Selling fur is now against the law in West Hollywood

"Both celebrating this historic ban, because this is the first city in the United States to pass such a ban and it's also to encourage other cities to follow suit," said Ellen Laventhal, a supporter of the ban.

A new city ordinance bans stores from selling ‘wearable fur' items like clothing shoes and hats

But items like fur blankets, purses and pocketbooks aren't banned.

The law was approved by WeHo's city council nearly 2 years ago – but didn't go into effect until now

"We wanted to give our local businesses a chance to think it through for themselves, to sell off their inventory," said John D'amico, West Hollywood's Mayor Pro Tem.

Not everyone agrees with the new ordinance.  Some feel the city shouldn't tell stores what they can or can't sell.

Others feel it could take away profits from high end clothing boutiques in the area.

"I think it goes too far. It should be regulated in some ways. Such as don't skin the animals alive but if its animals that are dead and people want to wear their fur I think that's fine," said Przemek Jaremko, who's against the law.

Supporters of the law encourage shops to sell faux fur instead.

"It's not just how they die, which is so painfully… it's how they live up until the day they die. With cramped cages, insufficient food shelter water.  It's horrific," said Laventhal.

The law doesn't affect second hand stores that sell used fur.
