New apple varieties coming from New York orchards

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Craving a crunchy McIntosh? How about a golden delicious or a honey crisp? Now your old favorites have some competition. Two new varieties of apple are being introduced this fall:

  • Snapdragon
  • Rubyfrost

The snapdragon is "a very nicely colored red apple and the eating quality is sweet and juicy," says Jeffrey Crist of Crist Brothers Orchard. The rubyfrost is "a larger apple and these won't be ready for harvest until late October."

The new varieties were developed by a scientist at Cornell.

Apple grower Jeffrey Crist says they should satisfy any apple lover's picky palate.

"I find the heavy apple eaters are extremely particular that they want the right condition, the firmness the juiciness," he says, adding that this year the conditions have been perfect.

"The weather has been particularly favorable for a very nice crop this year. The eating quality is exceptional," Crist says. "The cool August nights and the warm days has built up the sugar levels and we're currently picking Macintosh, honey crisp, gala and in a few days we'll be picking the new snapdragon, red delicious, empire, and we grow Fuji which are harvested later in October."

He says the most popular apple in New York State is the McIntosh. He expects them and the other varieties to go quickly.

"I think the interest level of apples has increased," Crist says. "We're having to compete with so many new foods, to increase the capital consumption has been a challenge, but we get a lot of support from the grocery store retailers and displaying the different varieties given the consumers a lot of options."

Crist says the new varieties of apples will be available at farmer's markets in the coming months.
