Oxford Area School District Bans Backpacks In Hallways

Posted: Updated:
OXFORD, Pa. -

13 pounds, that's the weight of a bowling ball. It's also the weight of one student's backpack.

"I have to carry a binder for each class, a book for each class and a notebook for each class. I think it's ridiculous," said Ejion Wilson. He's a student at Oxford Area High School. Many students in Oxford are upset about the school district's new policy that bans backpacks in hallways. The policy went into effect this school year.

"I'm kind of mad because there are a lot of books to carry and they can bruise our arms up," Tiana Ely, another student says.

Students have to either leave backpacks in their locker and carry books around or go back and forth to their locker between classes.

"I mean they have a lot of books, so it might be tough on them to carry all the books around," said Tamara Reynolds. Her daughter Kelsey is a senior who says that carrying books without a backpack is heavy and a hassle.

"I have probably like eight or nine books because we have eight classes," said Kelsey.

Sophomore Cassidy Raysik feels the same for more reasons than one.

"I play field hockey and lacrosse, two different season sports and I can never fit anything in my locker now," said Cassidy. She says it's hard to maneuver through crowded hallways with an arm-load of books.

"I almost tripped going down the stairs with all my books and it was really hard not to fall," she said. Cassidy spoke before the school board during a recent meeting. She hopes the board will reconsider the ban on backpacks which they say is for safety reasons.

"They're concerned about drugs, guns, weapons, alcohol and no one really does that stuff," said Cassidy.

FOX 29 contacted several school officials. We're waiting to hear back from them. One board member that we saw at the district building wouldn't speak in detail, but says that the district will be providing iPads to students this year to help ease the book load.
