The healthcare overhaul plan, known as "Obamacare" is set to launch October first. That's when people can start shopping for a new healthcare plan before coverage begins in January. Sunday, healthcare analyst Anne Dunkelberg spoke at a public event sponsored by the League of Women Voters in an effort to educate the community about the Affordable Healthcare Act. She discussed the resources available in Central Texas and was there to answer questions. She informed those at the event about the federal web site where people can go to shop for coverage which is being referred to as a marketplace.
"Basically the way the new marketplace works is, if you are somebody who is uninsured today or somebody who has been buying individual health insurance coverage straight come a company and not through a job, or if you're a small business with fewer than 50 workers, those are the folks who can go to this new marketplace," said Dunkelberg.
The ultimate goal of the healthcare overhaul is to help the working poor who have difficulty paying for health insurance. Premiums will be based on the ability to pay. An official list of insurance providers that will participate in the federal program has not yet been released. Under the law, everyone must have some form of health insurance or will have to pay a tax.
